Tova Sew-a-long

I’m joining in with Kerry’s Tova sew-along, in the hope that it will incentivise me to make myself some summer tops.

The Tova by Wiksten must be very zeitgeisty at the moment, I pinned it on my Pinterest board a couple of weeks back, and suddenly everyone else seems to be talking about it too. I’m not surprised, it’s a really pretty tunic, just right for spring. You can see some gorgeous examples in the Wiksten Patterns Flickr group. So, I’ve bought the pattern, now I have to decide on some fabric. I was wondering about using my Free as a Bird from Cut Out and Keep:

But sadly, I don’t have enough of it for the pattern. Then I wondered about some of Rashida Coleman-Hale’s Washi fabric:

Pretty funky isn’t it!  I got a Fat Eighth bundle of this collection from M is for Make today, and they are really gorgeous. I’m just not sure if I fancy a top that’s got such a full-on pattern as this! I think it would be good, but maybe not shy retiring little moi…

Another option is one of the Curious Nature fabrics from Parson Gray. I have this print (Cocoons) from Eclectic Maker:

This is a lot more subtle than my first too choices isn’t it – but I love this colour and the slightly 50s atomic vibe going on here. Dither, dither! Actually, what I really want to do is make a Liberty lawn version, but there’s no way I am going to cut into some of that stuff for my first attempt…

Speaking of first attempts – here’s my first super-speedy trial run at Noodlehead’s lovely Runaround bag pattern. I’m making one as a commission, and, as usual, had a practice run first:

It’s a fantastic pattern – I can highly recommend it, very clear and easy to follow. I see many more of these in my future! The main body of this is a Free Spirit seconds I picked up in my local Abakahn – it’s pretty groovy! I usually keep my trial runs (lucky me!), but I have enough shoulder bags for the moment and am selling this one. Because the fabric isn’t perfect, I am selling it at half price (£12.50) – just drop me a line if  you are interested…

  1. Having discovered your blog recently via a friend when I was trying to find good online material suppliers I now have a real desire to really start sewing again and I think this top is right up my street. Off to buy the pattern – eek

    1. Thanks Teresa, after struggling for an hour this afternoon trying to get the pleats right on the base of the next bag, I am thinking again about how quick it is! But I think it’s just one of those days. 😦 Upwards and onwards!

    1. You are right, but I have to say that I think I’d feel a lot more comfortable with something with a less regular pattern.. I don’t want to start obsessing about getting everything lined up… which I have a tendency to do.
